For renters
Vastu for the apartment you rent
If you rent, Vastu is not a teardown plan. The kitchen stack, the toilet and the corridor door stay where they are. What you can work with is the bed, the light, the entry and the brightest corner.

Does Vastu apply to apartments?
Yes, with limits. It applies as furniture and habits, not as plot rules.
ClassicalThe old building manuals describe a plot and a whole house. Brihat Samhita chapter 53 divides the house ground into 81 squares and assigns rooms to its corners (53.42, 53.118). It says nothing about a unit on the twelfth floor or an attached bathroom.
Living practiceModern practice translates those rules down to the unit you live in. You don't own the slope, the compound wall or the roof tank. You do control where you sleep, how you cook, and whether the entry works.
Use the parts that still make sense indoors: light, a working door, a clear middle, a calm place to sleep. Skip the parts that need a builder.
Three moves before anything else
- 01
Clear the entry and the brightest corner. A lamp at the door, no shoe heap, no box fortress.
- 02
Fix sleep. Solid headboard, off any beam, the quietest room. Head south or east if the wall allows.
- 03
Kitchen triage. Hob away from the sink if you can, task light on the counter, exhaust on.
ClassicalTwo of these echo the house chapter: it says not to sleep under a beam or with your head to the north or west (Brihat Samhita 53.124), and it lists a door that swings open or shut by itself, or is hard to enter, as a fault (53.79–81). Living practiceThe rest is ordinary good design.
If your apartment faces north, south, east or west
Read the direction of your unit door, not the building's lobby. A phone compass can be off near steel and wiring, so take the reading away from the fridge and check it against the floor plan. No direction makes a flat good or bad by itself, though the old door lists favour some walls over others.
- North door: keep the entry lit and clear, then check what sits in the northeast. See a north-door studio with a northeast bathroom.
- South door: make the door work. Light, an easy swing, shoes to the side. See a south door and a north kitchen.
- East light: put the desk or the sitting spot where the morning light lands. See a loft where the desk follows the light.
- West only: use the afternoon light you actually get and lamp the dark side. See a flat with west-only windows.

ClassicalThe old door verses rate each segment of a wall separately, for a house being built (Brihat Samhita 53.71–75). Every wall has segments the manual dislikes, east and north included, and the south list has the fewest good ones. Living practiceTurning that into "never take a south-facing flat" is popular teaching. For a rental, the door you can improve is the one you have.
Where to go next
- Optimize a home: room by room, without demolition.
- Everyday habits: sleep, cook and sit without a shopping cart.
- Northeast toilet: what to do when the bathroom took the northeast corner.
- Apartment cases: ten flats you can't rebuild, including the northeast bathroom studio and west-only windows.
- FAQ: short answers, including whether Vastu works in a New York or London rental.
What this hub will not do
- Fear-sell your toilet or your south door.
- MarketingTreat pyramids, strips or kits as if they came from the building manuals. They don't.
- Kill New York winter south sun as if it were a fire to be put out.
- Tell you to break a lease or move plumbing.
Start with the bed and the light.
